F-1 Student Visa

 

Description

F-1 student visa is for foreign nationals wishing to pursue a full time course of academic study at an accredited institution in the U.S.A.


Requirements

    The main requirements for the F-1 Student Visa are that :
  1. The student must have completed a course of study normally required for the program.
  2. The student has sufficient funds available to meet all living and school expenses for study.
  3. Acceptance indicated by form I-20 A-B issued by an educational institution approved by the INS.

Family members

The spouse and minor, dependent children of the F-1 holder may be entitled to F-2 dependent visas valid for the same amount of time as the F-1 holder. The spouse and minor, dependent children of the F-1 holder may not be employed.

Employment for F-1 Students

F-1 students may not accept off-campus employment during the first year of study. The INS may grant permission for F-1 students to accept off-campus employment after one year.

Duration of Visa

F-1 visa is generally valid for the duration of the study program, as indicated on the form I-20 AB. This is also indicated by "D/S", meaning "duration of status", on the I-94 card, which is issued upon entry into the U.S.A.
